If virtual desktops are what you're after, I recommend MultiDesk 2001.
You can find it at download.com by searching for "multidesk 2001". It
says it's in beta, but I've found it to be stable as anything. Mutidesk
sits in your system tray and is small, unobtrusive, and you can switch
desktops with a single click or with a hotkey.
If you search for multidesk, you'll also see a "Multidesk 1.0". Don't
get that one, get "Multidesk 2001 beta"
