If you just want access to your email archive from any system, definitely use
imap. You need to have access to a server that supports it.
If for example, you get/make an account on an imap server, you could connect to
it with Outlook Express and then push your archived mail to the imap mailbox.
Then any mail client that supports imap can access those archived emails.
