I had seen Planet CCRMA mentioned quite a bit during my JACK research,
but didn't look because of all the RedHat and rpm references. I didn't
know if it would have been relevant to my Gentoo environment. 

Do you know if the CCRMA kernel and apps have all the "capabilities"
stuff enabled and configured so you don't have to run all the Jack-based
apps as root in order to maintain scheduling priority?  Right now, I'm
just running the audio apps and the Jack server as root (I know, I
know....)

Yeah, I had to patch my 2.4.25 kernel with Andrew Morton's low-latency
patch. While the entire process was not without some pain, it wasn't
that bad either.  Believe it or not, the hardest part was discovering
the correct alsamixer settings.  I had never had to deal with audio
"capture" sources before.  This is a pretty sweet setup.  Now, if only
Ardour was a little more stable...

By the way, if you're using Jack, QJackCtl is an awesome app.
