[SATLUG] big file systems - tips, suggestions?

I'm about to install a huge amount of disk space and was wondering if
anyone had experience with creating, managing and tuning large file
systems.  I think at this point it's gonna be something over LVM over
mdadm, striped across a software RAID 5. But I'm not familar with the
limits of the tools as you get big... got any suggestions?

Also, managing all that space will be a challenge... tips on that welcome.
The cool rsync-while-hot, take-offline, rsync-again, mount new copy
trick is pretty neat
