[SATLUG] DVD burning help

It appears I need a good lesson in DVD burning before I make too many
more coasters.  I have a couple very large files (~3G) that I wanted
to backup to DVD.  mkisofs and dvdrecord behaved as normal, but
instead of there being a huge file of 3G on the disk, it only showed
10M!!  The iso image was the correct size (~3.1G) and the other much
smaller files on the DVD appeared fine.  I opened up the text files to
make sure that I they weren't corrupted.  So, what happened to my 3G
file?  Is there some magic option I need to use in mkisofs or
dvdrecord?  Can certain burners not handle files over 2G?

P.S.  A corollary to the above, if just making data DVDs, what options
do yall typically give to mkisofs and dvdrecord?  I just want to know
if I'm missing something important before I really get into making a
lot of DVDs (and not more coasters).
