well i started looking at other machines that have never had raid
configured...and they show multiple personalities under /proc/mdstat.

so it doesn't seem that that the personalities info relates to what arrays
are actually running, or if it does, I don't see the sense in it.  I
created a raid 5 on one, it then shows up as the only personality. I
delete that array, and create another from the same drives, a raid 0
array.  And then I see BOTH personalities.

I remove the raid 0  array, and the raid 0 personality disappears (like I
expected), but then the raid 5 personality remains.

and of course the machines that never had an array created...they show
personalities.

bah!!!! it's nonsense. :-)
