[SATLUG] Remote Apps

First I want to thank those who gave me some great inofr about DNS. etc. I 
have a new question. I would google it, but I'm not quite sure what the 
search terminology should be. I would like to remotely starts apps on a 
server via a webpage. For instance, say I have some app on my server that 
can turn my house lights on and off (I don't). How would I go about creating 
a webpage that has a button that would use this app to control my house 
lights? Or say perhaps I would enter a time in a text box, and the app would 
turn the lights on (off) for the given time?
