Hmm, it would help to know what exactly is not working.

Linux = Linux, so if it is supported at all (some hardware will NEVER be
supported because of proprietary interfaces) you can make it work on any
Linux distro. Some hardware may not work out of the box, and may require
some tweaking, but whatever is supported should work on any distro. I
have a feeling that your friend Larry is either looking for an excuse
to continue running Windows (in which case you should let him) or he is
simply not willing to put in the extra effort to make it work on a free
platform (which we all should respect, we are free to do more). Linux will
always be somewhat of an educational experience, and some people don't
have the patience for this. Recent versions of Linux have become quite
capable in running a decent setup "out of the box", but it may not be
enough for your friend.
