I really hate to pipe up, with risk of sounding like an asshole, but
I believe what you're looking for is Mono :)

Mono is everything that .NET _just can't be_, the C# class libraries
are more extensive, and there is far more you can do with it. Like..
IronPython: http://mono-project.com/Python ;)

No need to bring violence in the picture, the Mono runtime supports
loading Java bytecode as well: http://mono-project.com/Java :)

.NET was a great idea, but of course, as Microsoft tends to do with
good ideas (NT, for example), they blew it. I work with Mono on a
daily basis on a few different platforms, and it's head and shoulders
above anything .NET can offer in my opinion.

Did I mention that Mono runs on just about every incarnation of Linux
available, embedded on up? And Solaris, AIX, Mac OS X, Windows, and
you can embed the runtime as well? I really feel like Mono is what
Java could have been if Sun didn't have their thumbs wedged firmly up
their hind end in the mid-late 90's, or what .NET could have been if
Microsoft wasn't...Microsoft.

Anyways, midday rant over, time for Lin..erm, Lunch.

Cheers
