I suspect you're thinking of LDAP
Take a look at openldap. You can then use nss_ldap to pull user
information from the ldap server. PAM can also be used for your
authentication.

The O'Reilly book on OpenLDAP is really good and I highly reccomend it
as reading for openldap. It discusses integrating it with pam_ldap and
nss_ldap and other applications.
