This would be filed as a Linoyance:
GNOME's App associations: use nautilus: Right click on a file with the
appropo extension, choose Properties. Under the Open With tab, you can
control both the default App as well as ancillary Apps.
KDE: KDE Control Center | KDE Components | File Associations.
Once both of those are checked, see what Firefox thinks for
associations. If still incorrect, then Edit/Preferences | Downloads
context | View & Edit Actions. Find the Extension you want to edit,
then change the action. If the file type does not exist in the first
place, then find a link to a file of the appropo type, and prompt to
determine action should pop up. Pick the always do this checkbox and
then go through the above to edit it.
