[SATLUG] XGL/Compiz/Beryl on Ubuntu and Ubuntu installer reliability

I need to know how stable XGL with Compiz/Beryl is on Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS. I am planning to install Ubuntu on a P4 2.4ghz with 512mb of RAM, NVIDIA Geforce 4 MX 440 w/ AGP 8x and this is a family computer so I'll have to install Ubuntu Linux on a seperate HD.

I will also need to know how reliable the Ubuntu Installer is with the 6.06.1 ISO. Because when I reinstalled Ubuntu on my Linux computer (currently the only one in the house), I had to reformat all partitions including my /home/ partition on hdb2! Because GRUB said "Error [something]: file not found" even when whatever kernel file(s) it was referencing were there anyway. The GRUB bootloader would not work otherwise. GRUB was set to use (hd0,1) instead of /boot which would be on hda1, so that would be, (hd0,0) in GRUB syntax. I was using Ubuntu 6.06.0 ISO burned to a CD then.

The thing is, if I install Ubuntu and then it does not install GRUB right, Winblows XP might be messed up until I fix it and Dad would never allow me to install Linux again on his computer. Maybe just Ubuntu maybe will be messed up but I can't have neither.
