There for awhile when we were still using ftp sites without CVS or other
managements systems, using a PGP signature was how we signed our code.
As a sysadmin, I still have to digitally sign all my work related email
chatter. When the script kiddies and other miscreants were busy
denigrating the honorific term "hacker" it got difficult to find
pristine sources, and we embraced Zimmerman's PGP as a way to validate
what we needed to download as being genuine. The last time I was
published in TidBITS, I was using MacPGP to sign my MacPerl scripts.

While MD5 hashes have become the standard for validating sources, there
are still a lot of folks who digitally sign their code.
