While there are several MS channel simulators (of special note is the Moe Wheatly PathSim application), it appears that channel simulators, especially of the Watson Model finde more flexable when running under Linux.

It is important to note three important benefits to having a channel model for HF:
1) Waveforms can be developed and tested in a controlled and repeatable environment using the software model
2) Multiple researchers can work independently but are still be able to compare results
3) Multiple test facilities can compare results

The general refernece for this conclusion is in a paper by

The reference paper is "UNDERSTANDING HF CHANNEL SIMULATOR REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO REDUCE HF MODEM PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT VARIABILITY" by W. N. Furman and J.W. Nieto of the Harris Corporation, RF Communications Division, 1680 University Avenue, Rochester, New York, 14610

In studying complex HF data modes that to some extent emulate WiFi modes (especially OFDM), the development of such modes lends itself to development on Linux and then porting to MS.
