"What's good for someone with older hardware that needs an easy distro to
use?"

It really comes down to speed versus his requirements. If he just want's
to surf the web and check his email DSL or DSL-N are easy to install, easy
to configure and should run very nicely on his system.

If he wants lots of software options, Debian Sarge is a good choice. It'll
run fairly slowly and he'll have to "geek up" a bit to get decent monitor
resolution and sound but it won't be ram challenged. I had the devil's own
time getting a modem to run on Debian (for a friend) but once I figured it
out it really wasn't difficult. Ignorance can be a formidable opponent.

Xubuntu, if it runs at all on a 266 MHz system is going to be awfully slow.
Xubuntu will run on my 333 MHz Dell but Debian is notably faster while both
are slower than its original Windows 98.

If he wants something "in between" DSL and Debian, he might look at SaxonOS.
I didn't much care for it's predecessor, STX, but Saxon looks interesting.

Another I've read about, and even downloaded, but haven't had a chance to
try yet is KateOS.

I've some hardware coming soon (ordered but yet to be delivered) with which
I hope to build a faster Debian machine. Then I'm going to try both
SaxonOS and KateOS on the old Dell.
