Putting startx int he .bashrc is wrong minded since the X server runs local to
the keyboard and mouse and CRT. Remote logins will cause problems (assuming
one isn't purely relying on something like VNC to simulate console access).
The more correct way to achieve "auto-GUI-login" is to use the system as it
was designed.. with local access using runlevel 5 to spawn X. If it's a
matter of not wanting to log in, then yes.. one can bypass all security and
have XDM autologin. While a HUGE security risk, this would do what it sounds
like he wants (i.e. meet his requirements). Both KDE and Gnome feature
auto-login I believe, although I have not used it anywhere except on my
MythTV appliance.
