All of the solutions just point out that there's many ways to accomplish 
the same thing in Linux. However, you really want a minimal 
configuration without X so you can install the driver. Just use the CTRL 
+ ALT + F1 sequence everyone has suggested before. Login into the system 
and type:

                     sudo /sbin/init 1

to place the system in single user maintenance mode. When done, either 
press CTRL + ALT + DEL to reboot or type:


                     /sbin/init  6
