OK, so when you have the problem:
1. verify that you can ping your gateway (.1)
2. If all ok, then try pinging an Internet address by number like
64.233.167.147 (Google) in another window/terminal at the same time
3. If you are successful there, try pinging by hostname www.google.com
I suspect you may be having DNS issues and these tests should help nail
down the culprit. I realize there still could be some other issue, but
when troubleshooting, I like to start with the obvious.
