You can run a home DNS server on just about anything.  BIND works 
perfectly well on incredibly low-end machines, like a Soekris net4501 
Flash memory-based SBC 486-class system (about the size of a 
paperback book).  If your system can run any kind of a firewall, it 
should have more than enough horsepower to also run a caching 
nameserver.

And yes, I do believe it's well worth while.
