One of the great things about Linux, one size doesn't necessarily fit
all. There are so many different ways to run the same kernel, it's not
even funny. If you don't like Beryl, you have the choice not to run it.
In any case, it uses less resources than Vista, even running at full
barrel, but it still uses more resources than just Gnome or KDE. 

You have a choice! :)
