The folks I've helped adopt Linux were mostly Windows admins... so I'm
not sure how representative this would be of a normal user. The topics
most of them want to discuss early on may be good starting points for
the open source fest:
1. Samba - once they've gotten samba shares set up on their networks,
they find it much easier to sell Linux to their systems configuration
policy makers. Some questions that I get repeatedly are how to use
Active Directory for authentication.
2. Evolution connections to Exchange. If they're going to use Linux on
their desktops, they still need to connect to their corporate MTA.
3. Overview of the various distros, both commercial and free. Among
commercial industry admins, a discussion of CentOS interworking with
RHEL. This often changes from CentOS to Scientific Linux with military
and other federal admins.
4. Modifying media players on RedHat, SuSE, Ubuntu to play DVD's (why
admins need this is open to discussion).
5. SeLinux settings, and how to modify firewall settings in Linux.
6. Setting up the various WiFi NICs for Linux laptops.
7. Repairing grub on the master boot partition without having to
reinstall.
8. Setting up a printer server (related to #1 above).
