My personal experience with ATI cards under Linux has been quite
negative, especially when trying to use the proprietary fglrx drivers.
 If you have the budget and expansion space I'd recommend getting an
nVidia card instead.  Although neither company is willing to
open-source their firmware specs, at least nVidia provides a decent
binary driver that is very easy to install, and that I've personally
never had a problem with.
