Okay, I've had enough. He has a Rage Mobility chipset. FGLRX only supports
Radeon 8500 and newer. In fact, support for everything below the 9500 series was
dropped recently.

This looks like your problem:

[drm] failed to load kernel module "mach64"
(II) ATI(0): [drm] drmOpen failed
(EE) ATI(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit Failed

And your Knoppix CD was using the svga driver, which is generic.

According to
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIMach64?action=highlight&value=CategoryHardware,
"Why isn't Mach64 built by default?

The reason the Mach64 driver isn't built by default yet is due to lack of proper
security." Build instructions are linked on that page, but it looks like there
are some issues.

Why exactly do you need 3d acceleration with such an old chipset? You aren't
going to get much out of it and you certainly won't be able to get Xgl to run
even if you did get 3d accel. AIGLX won't work. Basically, you could get
glxgears to run (slowly) and maybe some of the 3d screen savers. Even that would
be unnecessary load on your system.

My suggestion would be to let this one go and live with crappy graphics...OR
spend some money and ditch the old POS.
