[SATLUG] Help with Modem

February 17, 2000 (11:57pm). I am sooo lost. I am where FC-6 is running
under Gnome and I have setup several user accounts that all work just
fine far as I know. I can use the menus and so far can do most of what I
will want to do using Linux (would LinWin be cool). I can also DL from
net on WinBox and Samba over to the Linux box

Now where I am lost is trying to get the modem to work, yes it is a
WinModem but a Smart Link PCI so the slamer driver is supposed to work.

I DLed and ran scanModem.gz and from there got to SLMODEMD.gcc3.tar.gz.
I moved it into a user/temp and unpacked, file ‘read me first’ said:

==========Very Short Usage summary===============
# su - root
# chmod a+x slmodemd
unless using a bootable CD
# cp slmodemd /usr/bin/
BUT for Debian related Linux distirbutions, instead do:
# cp slmodemd /usr/sbin
The above completes slmodemd installation.
# find /usr -name slmodemd
should ONLY report the newly copied slmodemd
Should another older slmodemd copy be found rename it slmodem.old

First insert an ALSA modem driver.
# modprobe low_level_driver
among low_level_ drivers listed below
# slmodemd --alsa -c YOUR_COUNTRY modem:1
If using a CD boot, instead:
# ./slmodemd --alsa -c YOUR_COUNTRY modem:1

This creates the modem ports
/dev/ttySL0 --> /dev/pts/N
and prepares for later High Level slmodemd functions.

I felt that this archive should be moved somewhere and unpacked then the
commands
# su - root
# chmod a+x slmodemd
I opened a terminal and tried but only su worked the chmod came back
with no such file.

I then logged in as root moved the archive to / and unpacked where it
created a folder to put itself into, very cool, so repeated the terminal
attempt and tried # chmod a+x slmodemd .... came back again with no such
file.

Since I really do not understand how Linux does stuff I am guessing that
I need to put either all these files somewhere or I need to do a cd to
somewhere and open terminal from there, maybe both.

I have read bout a million words on Linux so how could I have missed it?

Can someone sort me out please?
Thanks herb
