so in conclusion

-compiling your own software _can_ be more powerful/flexible
-bsd ports is wonderous, mostly
-and tomorrow I'll be using my pre-compiled binaries, like I did today, 
and yesterday.

and one last thing: Even if one is 99% a pre-compiled kind of guy (or 
gal), its probably helpful to feel comfortable with the basics, and 
appreciate "make install", emerge, and the like...
