My laptop also has an atheros card, and worked "out-of-the-box" in
Ubuntu 6.10. It is included in the linux-restricted-modules:

That said, if you build your driver from source, you can set it up to
work in promiscuous mode with Kismet & Airsnort. I was able to crack
my own 128 bit WEP key in about 45 minutes this way! Time to upgrade
to WPA when the funds become available.
The only annoying thing about wifi in Ubuntu is that the annoying
gnome-keyring-daemon asks for a password every single time you switch
between encrypted wifi networks. I hacked together a shell script to
bypass this so I could flip on the computer, and get on the Internet
rather than having to enter a pw every single time.
