For the scanning I use gimp and an older model Epson Perfection scanner
with scsi or USB interface (both work great). I think the model is a 1640SU.
It was around $130 about 4 years ago.
For faxing I use efax and a script that turns the fax into a gif and mails it
to my e-mail account. I use an old internal SupraFax v2.0 modem (ISA), it still
works great and sends at 14,4 kBaud.
I am not sure about newer fax modems, either they are PCI or USB, but I haven't
tried either one. Some of the combo units from HP may do all of the above,
but I like to get faxes e-mailed.
At home I use an external US Robotics modem with a serial RS232 interface and a
really old HP SCSI HP ScanJet 4C. Same software, or I fax directly from
OpenOffice.
Let me know if you need further details.
