Here's the long list: xine, totem-xine, kaffeine-xine, (g)mplayer,
vlc, and gxine. They all have problems and here's what I get when I
start from the command line:

Maybe the file does not exist or cannot be accessed, or there is an
error in the URL.
P.S. The regionset command shows that it plays region 1 DVDs:
edcoates at nightscape:~$ regionset /dev/dvd
regionset version 0.1 -- reads/sets region code on DVD drives
Current Region Code settings:

type: SET
vendor resets available: 4
user controlled changes resets available: 4
drive plays discs from region(s): 1, mask=0xFE
