The /etc/udev/ settings appear to be broken, because even when I tried to
edit those files to make everything sound-related to chmod 666, it kept
reverting back to 660 and owned by root:root. I agree, it is lame. In the
end I just dropped a few lines into /etc/rc.local to chmod 666 those nodes
and be done with it. This is my home system - I don't want to spend hours
troubleshooting this box that has one user.
Thanks for your help, I can see that Fedora 7 is still a bit half-baked in
some areas, and will probably recommend Ubuntu for home use from now on.
