If anyone's interested here's how I fixed this:

Added this line to xorg.conf in the screen section:
        Option     "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

Added this to the Module section:
        Load  "extmod"

Fired up beryl-manager and away we go.  Wobbly windows FTW!
