I can only speculate but I think Linux developers are paying serious
attention to the many reviews which criticize Linux desktops and trying to
"fix" the remaining problems as quickly as they can while MS is still
staggering from public negative reactions to Vista. Linux is going through
a period of exponential growth for lots or reasons which mostly add up to
the fact that its time has arrived.
If keeping up with new releases is becoming troublesome, and the current
incarnation answers all your needs, just install the most recent LTS version
and stay with it until the next LTS release. On the other hand, if (like
many of us) you have a little "wish list" of things you'd like to see
improved, rejoice in the knowledge that your list is going to get smaller
with each successive release and try to enjoy the ride:)
