Sometimes the salary and benefits are less important than just getting the
job. All most of us want or need from life is a comfortable home, enough to
eat, someone to share it with and interesting work.

If this is the job you want, first, do they know you want it? Do they know
how much you want it? Corporate executives have a responsibility to 1. Get
the best possible wage and benefits package for themselves. 2. Provide
underlings with whatever it takes to keep them happy and productive for the
lowest possible cost.

Everything is Always about ROI. If they know how much you want this job
then they're counting on that motivation as a bargaining chip in the
negotiations. If they don't know, and the desperation you sensed was
real, rather than a ruse to convince you they're offering you as much as
they can afford to give, then the situation may be so far gone that nothing
you can do will salvage it.

Every time I've had to make a very difficult choice I've just asked myself
which choice would still look right twenty years from now. Sometimes that
doesn't help but sometimes considering the "long term" instead of the "now"
is enough to clarify one's thinking.

Something else to consider is the fact that your Social Security income will
be based on your best three consecutive years so, even if the gig totally
sucks, if it doubles your salary for even a single year, it could greatly
improve your income later.
