Ernest,
The below is a naritive of the problem.

Model # LinkSys EFG80 Network Attached Storage (with 80 GB Maxtor Hard
Drive)
Firmware Version V1.0R33
Tip that there was problems:
Background: My home network is Windows based (sorry!). I have 3 XP
machines and a couple of old Windows 98 machines. Over the course of
the previous month (prior to failure) occasionally my systems would
loose contact with the NAS. Rebooting the NAS would normally bring it
back. The final failure occurred when I had 2 XP and one Win 98
attached to it. The Win 98 was playing MP3 files off of the NAS, 1 XP
machine was idle and I just finished copying a folder to the NAS that
had an HTML file and associated folder (small - maybe 50K). When I
tried to read the file that I had just copied, the NAS was no longer
visible. I rebooted several times but was unable to re-attached. When
I looked at the information on the NAS internal web site, it said that
the drive was "unformatted". I pulled the drive out of the first bay
and put it into the second bay but it was still a no-go. I put the
drive in my one of my XP machines and booted with a Knoppix 5.1 CD and
tried to mount it - no-go.
