Yes, I have helped a few folks pick a virtual machine for there small
websites. But look very close to what they offer.
Most are Fedora Core 3 or below. This will make it difficult to install
the most recent package or updates. Plus at some point you will need to
upgrade to a bigger and more powerful server with ... the latest version
of the packages installed. Can you imagen running an older (less
secure) version of apache, mysql, php or perl? Or install something
that is written for php5 but only having php4 installed?
Virtual machines are great for small websites. But know what you are
getting into and what is actually installed.
Don't be afraid to call their tech support and ask questions. See how
they respond to your question, if they know the answers; like what
version of mysql are you running. Most canned websites use LAMP. So ask:
o What version of the Operating System does the VM have?
o What is the version of the Apache?
o What is the version of the Mysql?
o What is the version of the PHP or Perl?
