I wrote this a while back. It still applies.
Phone companies are not your friends. They are still mad the oil
companies got the real money making resources but they would like to
play in the big leagues with them.
Anyone who would charge you rental for years on your phone while you,
the taxpayer, paid for the entire phone infrastructure plus some is
pretty greedy and arrogant.
Here's an example of how much:
"ISPs have had a golden opportunity to provide all these services
(list provided upon request) but because they are controlled by some
of the dumbest, greediest management in existence they blew off all
these value-add services. Ever wonder why it costs you cell phone
minutes when someone calls you? The one I love is being charged for
"Not using my AT&T Long Distance". I pay $3.55 per month, of which
$2.00 is the service cost and the rest is taxes. $0.99 cents is a
"Carrier Cost Recovery Fee", for not using any Long Distance. I did
not ask for this service and I cannot cancel it. I have been warned
they will punish me by charging a higher rate on other services.
What a rip!
What a waste of a beautiful opportunity to offer services I would be
willing to pay for."
