I've given away nine computers in the last eight months. I'm not sure how
it happened, for years it was all I could do to keep a functioning 266 MHz
Win98 machine on my desk, but a few months after I got into Linux was
consequently dragged into learning something about hardware I decided that I
wanted to make a contribution to the Linux community. I'm no programmer and
I'm not affluent enough to make meaningful monetary donations but, having
been an electronics technician for 25 years, I didn't have much trouble
picking up a practical knowledge of computer hardware and as soon as I
decided to build Linux computers and give them away I became a "hardware
magnet". I can't explain it but I now find it easy to acquire computer
hardware (in the 500 to 600 MHz range anyway) and I may soon actually be on
the board of directors of a geek-owned non-profit corporation which acquires
used computers, via donation from schools, corporations, and other entities,
refurbishes them, installs Linux, and gives them to students (I intend to
"lobby" for placing senior citizens who have fixed incomes on the recipient
list). We live a little over two hours from SA (in Tow) and my wife and I
are both traffic-phobes but if any of you who have computer hardware you'd
like to "unload" are willing to meet us in Blanco we'll spring for lunch or
supper (as the case may be).
I wonder if there'd be any percentage in putting on an install-fest, perhaps
through the offices of the public library, in Blanco? Just a thought.
Whatever. We're easy to contact via our website.
