Why not run a distro off a usb stick on a Linksys NSLU2, easier and faster
though would be to just boot off of the hdd that holds your storage in an
external enclosure. performance for such a low power device is really nice.
using a armeb uclibc install allows you to install any headless server
software you might require for it, i ran a lightweight httpd, sshd, nfsd and
more on mine, the distro i chose was gentoo, more since gentoo's cross
compilation offerings are still outstanding, secondly because i found the
precompiled offerings too limiting, check out http://www.nslu2-linux.org for
more.
The hawking tech 54g usb stick also works for that. which allows you to just
hide it away in a closet, and it won't take up much space there.
Hope this helps any,
Daniel
