[SATLUG] Memory Usage w/64 bit

All,

I recently bought an AMD X2 3800 machine and installed the 64-bit version of 
FC6. The machine has 1 gig of memory. When I run top (with just KDE running) 
I see that well over 600 meg of memory is being used. Is this common? Is it 
that the 64-bit versions of apps have a larger "footprint"? Thanks for any 
info you may provide.
