I ran Ubuntu x86-64 for a long time, but took a chance with x86 and noticed a considerable drop in memory use. As a comparison, here's what I've got right now running Ubuntu x86 w/ Gnome, Gaim, Gnome-RDP, Exaile!, multiple gterms, and VMWare Server w/ three VMs running.

$ free
             total used free shared buffers cached
Mem:       1035564     998448      37116          0     209280     486520
-/+ buffers/cache:     302648     732916
Swap:      4345540      34772    4310768

So there you go.
