I ran Ubuntu x86-64 for a long time, but took a chance with x86 and noticed a considerable drop in memory use. As a comparison, here's what I've got right now running Ubuntu x86 w/ Gnome, Gaim, Gnome-RDP, Exaile!, multiple gterms, and VMWare Server w/ three VMs running.
$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1035564 998448 37116 0 209280 486520
-/+ buffers/cache: 302648 732916
Swap: 4345540 34772 4310768
So there you go.
