LFS is meant as a learning tool. It is not a distro, per se, but a
way of learning how a distro can be put together. If you want to learn
how packages are built and inter operate, then LFS is the way to go. If
you are not interested in the build details, or already know them, and
just want a system built from upstream packages, then build systems like
Source Mage or Gentoo are the way to go. Pre-built systems like Debian
or Slackware are the next closest thing to building from source.
