I sat in on a presentation a few years ago from someone who had looked
at the typical computer (CRT) display and it's affect on our eyes -- I
think he was an opthamologist or something like that. He said that the
way the image is created makes it appear to our eyes that the image is
actually slightly behind the physical screen, and causes eye strain when
we're sitting close to the monitor because our eyes can't decide what to
focus on -- the physical screen or the image. I would expect this
effect to diminish the further we are from the monitor.
His presentation didn't address LCDs, but since the way the image is
created on an LCD display is so different than on a CRT, I would think
that the impact on our eyes would be different. That may explain why an
LCD of the same size would seem to appear clearer.
