Unfortunately, not.  They may have cost $599 to start with, but you 
can get them new for $399 now, and Apple is selling refurbs for $100 
less than that.  So, he's more likely to be looking at getting $250 
(or less, possibly much less), if his is in pristine condition.

And then there's the early termination fee from AT&T that would 
probably be as much or more than that.

So, that's a false economy.
