[SATLUG] Add unprivileged user to WRT-54G running dd-wrt?

Does anyone know how to add an unprivileged user to a Linksys WRT-54GL
running the dd-wrt firmware?  I want to add a regular user account for
ssh port forwarding, and cannot see how to make it stick.  /etc/passwd
is a symlink to /tmp/etc/passwd which seems to be overwritten on each
boot.  I must confess I am not familiar enough with the dd-wrt
firmware to know how to tackle this one.
