Right. It is very easy to increase your personal contacts by 
participating in LUGs mailing list,  talking at LUGs meeting, attending 
LUGs/barcamp/other geeky meetings,  blogging etc. I got a very good job 
offer from someone who read my technical blog. I also know few others 
who have got similar offers.  Talking at meetings will also help a lot.  
LUG meetings are more for networking than for learning technical stuff.
