If all you need is a calendar and forum, might I suggest SMF [
http://simplemachines.org/ ]. I've used it numerous times and it's
extremely easy to setup and manage. It has the two features you're seeking
out of the box. It also has a robust group permissioning system that allows
you to grant or revoke permissions on a granular level if you like.

It doesn't sound like you need a full groupware or CMS solution, so I am
going to say stay away from them unless you need the additional
functionality they can provide. The amount of time it takes to stand up SMF
will be a fraction of that you would spend on the other mentioned
solutions.
