ndiswrapper with Broadcom drivers is going to work basically the same
way on *any* flavor of Linux you choose.  This is not Ubuntu's fault.
I had a Broadcom adapter that also had spotty reception and
connectivity on a CentOS box.

Madwifi drivers will not work with Broadcom cards.  Unfortunately,
you're stuck with ndiswrapper for that particular laptop.  This is why
I always try to get an Atheros chipset because I'm reasonably certain
that it will work under Linux.
