I have no advice on books, but I do have advice on grip. I had no luck with
grip until I modified some settings.

In grip go to the 'config' tab and choose the 'Misc' tab and set the
following:
Check 'Do not lowercase filenames'
Check 'Allow high bits in filenames'
Uncheck 'Replace incompatible characters by hexadecimal numbers' (or check if
you wish)
Check 'Do not change spaces to underscores'

Under the 'Encode' tab I have set for 'Encoder':
Encoder: lame
Encoder executable: /usr/bin/lame
Encoder command line: I left it as is
Encode file extension: mp3
Encode file format: /home/username/Music/%A/%d/%t_%n.%x

For the 'Encode' - 'Options' tab:
Check 'Delete .wav after encoding'
Uncheck option for SQL database
Check 'Create .m3u files'
Check 'Use relative paths in .m3u files'
M#U file format: /home/username/Music/%A-%d.m3u
Encoding bitrate (kbits/sec): 320 (my preference) - use lower number like 192
if you want to save more space

'Rip' tab followed by 'Ripper' tab
Ripper: grip (cdparanoia)
Check 'Disable paranoia'
Check 'Disable extra paranoia'
Rip file format: /home/username/Music/%A/%d/%n.wav
In the 'Rip' - 'Options' tab:
I checked 'Auto-eject after rip' and 'beep after rip' ... my preference.

grip rips perfectly for me now and puts subdirectories in ~/Music with artist
name followed by subdirectory for the album name and all tracks are inside
the album subdir, numbered and named.

One more tip:
When you load a disc and see the tracks listed, click where it says 'rip' just
next to 'Length'... this will auto-select all tracks so you don't have to
check each and every one. Then just go to the Rip tab and select 'Rip+Encode'
That's it.

Good luck
