BlueGene is certainly a fantastic machine, about 360 teraflops (peak)
with over 130k cores.
But Ranger, which is currently being assembled just up the road from
us on the UT Austin campus will exceed half a petaflop with just 50k cores
if memory serves me right.
That equation will change early next year when Ranger comes online. I
went to visit the new place at TACC, it is pretty impressive. Also, NEC
in Japan is projecting petascale compute power for their next generation
NEC system. They announced a new system under development last year at
SC'06.
I am waiting to see what science can be done with these machines.
