[SATLUG] job opportunity in NYC

That's a major problem with this city. The cost of
living is so low that no one makes a serious effort to
determine the fair market value of their skills and
everyone is underpaid. Ok, so I exaggerate... but just
a little.

The Texas Workforce Commission has put together some
statistics in this area. See
http://www.texasindustryprofiles.com/apps/win/ for
starters. Click on the "Areas" tab and select "Alamo"
for our locale. Click on the "Occupations" tab and
select "Computer and Mathematical Occupations." Ok, so
there are no exact matches for "web programmer," but
"Computer Software Engineers, Applications" is
close... maybe not so close. Click on the "Search" tab
and search for "web programmer." Select "Keyword
Search" and type "web programmer" in the "Search for:"
text box and click the "Submit Search" button. Well, I
see "Alamo, All Industries, Computer Programmers,"
which I believe may be a little more relevant. See
here:
http://www.texasindustryprofiles.com/apps/win/eds.php?geocode=4817000020&indclass=1&ind=000000&occcode=15-1021&compare=2

Now that we have all educated ourselves on the fair
market value of our skills, I expect we can look
forward to a moderate increase in wages in this
industry.

So that begs the question, what should a programmer in
SA make,
specifically web programmers? I am about to try and
make a move from
 the
ad agency I work for to a company that is focused on
web design and
development. Being that I am 1) underpayed for my
various skills where
 I
am at, and 2) I have no idea what a programmer makes
in this city, I
have no idea what kind of salary figures to expect.
While I am
 certainly
not asking the dumbest of questions "Er, what do you
guys make for a
living?" I am curious what kind of range someone can
expect as a web
developer.

Thanks,
Nate
