If this is a Sprint AirCard, then yes, it needs to be activated in Windows... after that, it just behaves like a modem. The dial out number will be something like 777 and it needs to be set as /dev/ttyUSB0 (probably) and with a baud rate of 230400. The user account info is set on the aircard when activated in Windows, so no other configuration needs to be done.
